We are building world’s first full-scale plant for a biopolymer (PHA) from paper process water.

A global first in the paper and the plastic industry
We are developing the first full-scale plant for the production of PHA from paper process water. With the new plant, we will purify the process water system, which will significantly improve the living and working environment and at the same time produce a natural alternative to plastic (PHA).

Working towards a circular paper industry
The Eska site in Hoogezand does not discharge any process water, as it has been operating with a largely closed water management system for many years. Process water contains valuable organic waste that is currently hardly being valorised. The production of PHA will change this and also contribute to a circular paper industry. PHA can be used as a biodegradable barrier coating and/or adhesive. When Eska produces PHA from its own process water and uses it in its own products, it is certainly circularity at its best.
Treating process water creates value
By producing PHA in the process water, you can create value with water purification.
Zero liquid discharge
Producing PHA is also particularly interesting if you want to work on zero liquid discharge solutions.
A circular paper industry
Did you know that PHA can also be used as a biodegradable barrier coating or adhesive in our products?
